  • The Association of New Circus has been established and MOVE Ostrava is part of it!

On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the Czech Association of New Circus (ANC) was officially established in Prague. And why are we writing this to you? Because MOVE Ostrava, alongside the organizer of the popular Ostrava festival Cirkulum Cirkus trochu jinak, has become a member representing the needs of the regions from the Moravian-Silesian Region 🥳 Together with other colleagues, we have long felt that the new circus community did not have unified representation in the Czech Republic, so we are very pleased that we could contribute to the establishment of this much-needed professional association. We believe that thanks to this membership, important information from the field of new circus will be systematically disseminated in the circus scene, reaching us and therefore potential participants sooner. Furthermore, we believe in the emergence of more interdisciplinary performances and more circus events brought to Ostrava. At the same time, we greatly appreciate the trust placed in the hands of Jana Ryšlavá, who was elected to the board of the association. Here she undertakes to represent the needs of the regions as well as the connections towards dance and other related fields. If you want to stay updated on this topic, we recommend subscribing to the newsletter of the New Circus Professionals Platform, to which you can sign up here. OFFICIAL REPORT On March 19, 2024, with the approval of the articles of association and the election of the board, the Association of New Circus (ANC) was officially established. The meeting took place at the Institute of Art in Prague and online via Zoom. It was attended by founding members, including a total of 15 organizations and 9 individual members. The founding members approved the ANC articles of association and elected the first board. Jiří Turek, the director of the Letní Letná festival, was elected as the Chairman of the Association. Other board members include director and lecturer Ondřej Holba, director of CIRQUEON Eliška Jevičová, artistic director of MOVE Ostrava Jana Ryšlavá, and director of Cirku La Putyka and Jatka78 Ondřej Vykoukal. Mission of the ANC The Association of New Circus is an open association of independent professionals and organizations operating in the field of new circus throughout the Czech Republic. As a professional organization and platform, it serves all those who want to contribute to the development of new circus in the Czech Republic. Through its activities, the ANC aims to support, facilitate, and implement initiatives and activities that contribute to the development of the new circus scene in the Czech Republic. Its main goal is to provide comprehensive support to entities and individuals in the Czech new circus scene, their development, and professionalization through facilitating communication between members and public administration, organizing specialized seminars and workshops, and presenting the Czech scene both domestically and internationally. • The year 2023 through the eyes of the MOVE team

The time for reflection has come for us as well, and we interviewed almost all members of the MOVE team. We asked them to go through this year's dynamic experiences and choose their highlight of 2023. Read on, and you will find out what MOVErs enjoyed the most and what they will cherish the most in their memories. Jana: The most powerful moment for me was MOVE Fest - I am incredibly happy about the connections between people, projects, and initiatives that sparked there. Furthermore, it was beautiful for me to observe the team and experience trust and support in moments when I couldn't be present. Last but not least, I have a profound experience from the Greenlandic residency. There, I experienced feelings that are hard to describe. Pavel: For me, the most powerful experience was the final tour of the performance "Brave New Life." I was part of the team from the beginning, the project made sense to me, and I enjoyed traveling to these shows a lot. It was just a heartfelt experience. Also, thanks to it, I met a lot of inspiring people! Lucie: I am still fascinated that during the MOVE Festival, we managed to organize the final Roller Skate Party, including our own skate rental! It was a completely new thing we came up with, and it caught on wonderfully. The party brought together various groups of festival guests, and I believe everyone enjoyed it :) Eliška: I remember most the Slovak band The Urge at the Kuří Rynk. It fascinated me to watch the audience, who were just passing by, being drawn in by the power and energy of the performance and couldn't tear themselves away until the end. Terka: "Burden without weight!" The experience for me was the tightly-knit creative team. It was a challenge for me to observe them at their heights - I stepped out of my comfort zone a lot there. It was a tremendous joy to care for this fantastic team! Vali: I most enjoyed the discussions, conversations, and sharing with professional artists, such as Markéta Pospíšilová - she truly enchanted me. I liked how the artists engaged with each other, showing genuine interest in exploring what others create and learning more about them. A fantastic informal opportunity to meet and get involved was the Sunday festival brunch. Bára: The entire MOVE Fest and its incredible festival vibe thrilled me. I am very grateful for meeting some top-notch dancers, having the opportunity to talk to them, and seeing how they create and think.

  • Dozens of spectators experienced 'Zátěž bez tíže' in the revitalized FUTUREU

It's been a month since Finnish performer and creator Ilona Jäntti brought together 8 selected performers through an open call, assistant director Šárka Bočková, the unique genius loci of Dolní Vítkovice, and in 5 days crafted a breathtaking site-specific project called 'Zátěž bez tíže' from this combination. Today, we bring you a little retrospective - for the eyes and the ears 😉. ACROBATICS AND DANCE IN A FORMER COAL MILL? NO PROBLEM! If you are our loyal fans, you surely know the principle of a site-specific performance. For newcomers, let us explain that it is a production tailored to a specific location within a relatively short period (in our case 5 days) and usually involves a group of performers who have not collaborated before and only perform together within the framework of this project. The resulting performance is then presented in a very limited number of performances, sometimes even just once! The invitation to create a site-specific project for the 10th edition of MOVE Fest was accepted by Finnish performer and director Ilona Jäntti, who enlisted the assistance of Šárka Bočková, a graduate of the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava. Through an open call, the creators selected 7 women and 1 man, and on September 29, 2023, they entered the unexplored space of FUTUREUM in Dolní Vítkovice for the first time. Together, they spent 5 days (almost 5 nights) shaping an outcome that breathed life into the mining and industrial heritage of Ostrava, offering a fresh and creative perspective that leaves one in awe. 👀 Following a week of intensive rehearsals in the former coal tippler and mill building, the public dress rehearsal, premiere, and two performances of "Weight without Gravity" took place. Only a "mere" dozens of festival attendees experienced it firsthand. They took away a powerful experience from this unique combination of industrial surroundings, nouveau-circus choreography, and the daring performances of the artists. If you missed it or want to relive this beauty, here's a brief look back from the lens of Petr Rehanek ⤵️ (NOT ONLY) ABOUT ZÁTĚŽ BEZ TÍŽE WITH ILONA JÄNTTI "Burden without weight" became the third collaborative site-specific project of Ilona Jäntti and Šárka Bočková. Both ladies share a passion for aesthetics and details, emphasizing the complexity of unforgettable movement scenes, which was reflected at every step in FUTUREUM. How did Ilona experience creating in Ostrava? What inspires her most about new locations for site-specific projects? And how did she get into the new circus in the first place? 🎧 Listen to Episode 18 of MOVECast, where Anna Bangoura interviews the director: #18 Finnish acrobat Ilona Jäntti loves the contrast of site-specific locations and the human body ▶️" "BURDEN WITHOUT WEIGHT" THROUGH THE EYES OF PERFORMERS MONIKA SPÁČILOVÁ Being part of the site-specific project within MOVE Fest was enriching, in every sense. In all honesty, my initial assumptions were somewhat skeptical, thinking that, as an element from aerial acrobatics with a circus background, I might not fit in with the dance majority of our group. However, right from the start, Ilona and Šárka created an atmosphere that made me feel like we've known each other for years. At the same time, they found positions for all of us where we could each showcase our own art. For both us and the directors, the spaces were completely new and untouched, so the first few days involved both guided and improvised exploration of the area. This part was the most appealing to me - one can let their imagination work to the fullest. We had a total of 4 performances. One public dress rehearsal and then three official shows. The biggest challenge was working with people and subtly guiding them through the space. In not all parts of the Futureum could people stand in one cohesive group, as they are accustomed to in other performances. It was necessary to spread them out so that each viewer could see what we wanted to convey to them through movement, acrobatics, lights, and choreography. It was a task especially for us because the viewer found themselves in the spaces where we performed for the first time. And, I think, thanks to the dress rehearsal, we always succeeded. With each reprisal, I dare say we were better and more natural guides through the space without words. ADÉLA JORDÁKOVÁ Participating in the rehearsals for the 'Weight Without Burden' project led by Ilona and Šárka gave me the opportunity to get to know new acrobats and dancers and collaborate with them, which was a very enriching experience for me. The underground spaces where we rehearsed were in many ways constraining, as the project's content had to adapt a lot to the space, but finding out what is and isn't possible proved to be an interesting research in itself. The workshops that took place throughout the festival were absolutely great. They greatly expanded my movement practice, and although they were mostly dance-focused, the principles from them can also be applied to object work – in my case, with a rope. Now, I really enjoy incorporating a more 'dance approach' into my work. Last but not least, I had the opportunity to get to know Ostrava thoroughly, where I was for the first time, as the festival program took place in various locations around the city. After ten days, I started to feel like a local 🤗." • MOVE Fest Ostrava 2023 through the eyes of Duncan Center students

This year, as part of connecting the upcoming generation of pefomers with the reality of the current scene, we offered students of several conservatories and universities the opportunity to participate in the MOVE Fest Ostrava 2023 program completely free of charge. We believe that such support of young talents is needed and will soon return to us in the form of enthusiastic dancers, but perhaps also choreographers or creators in other equally important positions. One of those who took advantage of this opportunity were the students of the Prague Conservatory Duncan centre. During the festival week in Ostrava, they watched several performances with their "future colleagues", took part in movement workshops led by their idols from the professional scene and (not only) had the opportunity to ask questions and share their observations during discussions. The meeting of students from DC with students from VŠMU, who performed as part of an impressive evening dedicated to young talents, was unique and enormously enriching both for us and especially for the students themselves Fresh dance. During the debate after this Thursday's program, a friendly debate took place between the two groups full of inquisitive comparison, debriefing and friendly sharing. Duncan center students themselves commented on their participation in MOVE Fest as follows: "It is very important in the dance industry to make contacts that can open new doors and opportunities later. That's what happened at Movefest. The possibility of meeting people from the dance sphere and insight into the processes of international dancers and their creations. Through various workshops, after the performance the following discussion with the creators. We agreed that it was rewarding to see the dancers up close, as it is more challenging in a regular theater environment. We are grateful for this experience. MOVE Fest rules!"

  • Jana Ryšlavá after MOVE Fest 2023: "Thank you! I am happy and grateful for 10 years together in motion."

Dear friends of dance and motion, 10th anniversary MOVE Fest Ostrava is behind us and I sit above these lines with joy and gratitude to express my thanks for the time spent together. I am extremely happy that this year MOVE Fest expanded to other locations and we could really embrace Ostrava with (e)motion! The festival has been more than just an event for us for 10 years - it's a journey on which we go further and further every year to show that Ostrava is not just a city, but a living organism full of creativity, talent and passion. I was even more pleased that this year many guest artists had the opportunity to stay at the festival for a few days and experience more of what MOVE Fest and Ostrava has to offer. The performers and creators boasted that they could meet with other guests and viewers, share experiences and discover the beauty of Ostrava. I am very happy that thanks to the festival, Czech and foreign visitors have been able to experience that Ostrava has really stepped out of its shadow and stereotype. But none of this would be possible without the efforts and support of many organizations, groups and individuals! And that's why I want to express my sincere thanks to all the coming artists, festival guests, partners, friendly institutions and the MOVE Fest team. Thanks to your commitment, focus and care for even the smallest details, we created an unforgettable experience together again this year. I am grateful that MOVE Ostrava has you and I appreciate that you are on the way to transform Ostrava with us. Thank you! And final thanks belongs to you - our invaluable viewers! Thank you for the energy you give to performers and organizers. Your support fills us with gratitude and motivation. I look forward to seeing you in motion not only at the next MOVE Fest, but also during the entire 2023/2024 season, which will bring a lot of beautiful moving experiences. With thanks and love, Jana LOOK BEHIND MOVE FEST OSTRAVA 2023 Video: Petr Rehanek Photo: Kamil Hauptmann

  • The Forces That Move residence in Greenland through the eyes of Jana and Zdenka

Do you remember the workshop and performative walk .tektoparty? Ostrava has already experienced it twice - on the Ema dump and in the vicinity of Landek. Each time it was a wonderful experience connecting movement, nature and participants into a harmonious whole full of knowledge. And why do we remember .tektoparty now? Because we consider performative forms in the landscape to be an important part of the contemporary art scene and we like to support interdisciplinary projects such as Geology of being Zden Brungot Svíteková. Zdenka and Jana Ryšlava spent the month of August on a residential stay in Greenland Ilulissat, specifically in the multidisciplinary center Arctic Culture Lab - an incredibly inspiring meeting place for (not only) artists and scientists . Together, they drew up an action plan for the individual steps to implement the project, worked on the adaptability of the .tektoparty concept and the new concept of the World Trail. Zden Brungot Svíteková has been dedicated to the connection of geology with movement, which proves the deep connection between the Earth's body and the human body, since 2016. Her Geology of being has been transferring scientific knowledge into an artistic context for years and allows us to perceive our planet from a different perspective . The residential stay of The Forces That Move in Ilulissat became for Zdenka and Jana another mirror for their own perception of nature and space, which they will use for their further work. One of the goals of the stay was to adapt the principles of the .tektoparty outdoor format to new locations so that it could be organized at any location. In replicating this workshop and the resulting performative walk, establishing a deep relationship with the local community and environment is central. Therefore, getting to know Central Europe's remote environment of Greenland - local nature and inhabitants - was a suitable opportunity to simulate getting to know the potential locations of the Tektoparty project. Also in Greenland, during the stay, a new concept with the working title Earth Trail began to emerge, which combines geology, eco-somatics, movement and public space. This is an interactive educational trail that anyone can go on and experience the fascinating connection of movement in nature with science. The starting point of the residency was in Arctic Culture Lab - a platform that brings together artists, curators, international experts, geopolitical specialists and producers and enables them to get to know Greenland as a place where everyday life takes place in harmony with nature. In today's busy world, artists rarely have the means or the will to invest the time needed to become intimately familiar with a place. Therefore, even this overall two-month residency The Forces That Move is also a call to transform both artistic and dramaturgical practice and to the development of innovative creative methodologies. Only in this way is it possible to penetrate deeper into the specifics of a specific place, get to know it and then pass on your experiences and knowledge to the audience. The director of Arctic Culture Lubu, Andreas Hoffmann, deserves personal thanks - for an abundance of information, inspiring experiences and genuine Nordic care. Thank you 🖤 August in Greenland gave Jana and Zdenko the opportunity to learn more about the inseparable coexistence of man and nature, art and science and their symbiotic harmony. Intercultural dialogue, getting to know local residents, tourists and scientists was also an interesting aspect. Thanks to these meetings, our ambassadors got a wonderful opportunity to get to know the relationships of local residents with their landscape and to study what we can transfer from them to our Central European environment. In addition, Jana used the authentic environment here to immerse herself in the preparatory phase of the newly emerging project Wild Geese, in which movement techniques and object theater procedures are connected with the theme of Nordic nature, myths and heroism. Wild geese in co-production with Fyzioart are based on the stories of Nordic heroes, legendary adventurers, as well as folk tales about wild geese flying north. We thus focus on the topic of understanding between man and nature, his necessary connection with his roots and his childhood, with the earth, clay and sky and its wind blowing across the intersections of (life's) paths. You can look forward to the result in the 2024/2025 season. The residency took place thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, National recovery plan, association Ostruzina and Art Support Fund. Thank you very much.
