YOGA

Step onto the mat and give yourself time—for yourself, your body, and your mind.

In the January sessions, Jana will share her favourite flow, which she tested and refined throughout the autumn especially for you. We’ll make space for breathing exercises and gentle warm-up, gradually explore new limits and possibilities, work with strength and flexibility, and leave room for regeneration as well. Part of the session will also focus on supporting the kidney meridian, which tends to be more strained during January. The class is designed to help you feel whole, balanced, and grounded.

Practical information:

The session is suitable for slightly advanced participants as well as beginners who already have some experience with movement. For each asana, Jana will offer an easier option and also suggest more challenging variations.

Please bring your own yoga mat and comfortable clothing that allows free movement, as well as a blanket or sweatshirt for the final relaxation.

Jana Ryšlavá is a dance and movement teacher, performer and cultural manager in the field of movement arts.

She graduated  Experimental Academy of Dance in Salzburg and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. After internships in Finland and Norway, she returned to the Czech Republic and began to develop contemporary movement approaches while teaching at the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava.

Since 2014, he has been curating the movement platform MOVE Ostrava and the MOVE Fest festival, which can now be found in Ostrava, Košice and Valašské Meziříčí.

SILENCE
OF TODAY

In this session, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals and core principles of mime. Together, we will explore how to understand mime, what defines the essence of this unique theatrical form, and how to meaningfully develop and apply it on stage within one’s own creative practice.

The workshop will focus on the preparation of the mime performer, movement technique, and acting and creative work within this specific genre. Step by step, we will also ask questions about the place of mime in the contemporary world—and perhaps begin to search for answers about the relevance and future life of this theatrical form within tomorrow’s cultural landscape.

The workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced participants, for artists and “vegetative artists” alike, and we recommend attending it in combination with the Sunday session School of Falls and Other Misunderstandings in Movement (see below).

SCHOOL
OF FALLS

The School of Falls workshop focuses on the existential needs, essence, and challenges of grotesque performance. Come and rediscover the charm of silent slapstick—or perhaps… physical comedy?

We will explore the comic aspects of theatre rooted in physicality, with an emphasis on discovering and developing one’s own way of thinking within this field.

During the workshop, participants will work through fall techniques based on the lecturer’s experience in sport, stunt work, stage combat, and theatrical practice. We will take a close look at different types of falls, their use in specific situations, and the potential pitfalls of various approaches.

The workshop is suitable for both beginners and advanced participants, for artists and “vegetative artists” alike, and we recommend attending it in combination with the Saturday session The Silence of Today (see above).

MATES PETRÁK

2023_11_19 Memento Mori 27 web.jpg

Mates Petrák is an artist working in the field of contemporary theatre. In 2024, he successfully completed his master’s degree in Nonverbal Theatre at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. During his studies, he began collaborating with leading Czech new-circus companies. As a mime, clown, and acrobat, he has performed at several international festivals, including Fringe and BIAC.

His performance career includes engagements with the National Theatre, Theatre Minor, the Summer Stage of Museum Kampa, and the Summer Shakespeare Festival.

He is known for his versatility and his ability to combine different forms of movement-based performance. In 2025, he received the Director’s Award of the National Theatre for artists under 35, recognising his outstanding talent and contribution to theatre.

Petrák’s authorial work draws on disciplines such as mime, grotesque, physical comedy, and new circus. He seeks to revitalise these forms and to shift how they are perceived by the wider public.

His work carries a dark view of the world, in which he finds poetic beauty, sharpened by the biting wit characteristic of his Ostrava roots.

He is also the founder of the “Theseus’ Ship” festival, created in collaboration with the Forman Brothers’ Boat, and in 2024 he began a multi-year collaboration with the Finnish company MimoArt, where he now works regularly. He has developed a technique of stage falls, which he has taught, among other places, at professional circus schools abroad. This technique continues to evolve and deepen through his ongoing practice.
