KITCHEN PORN

DIVADLO LOUTEK OSTRAVA
FRIDAY, APRIL 24,
7:00 PM

PHYSICAL THEATRE

Fancy a hot dinner? No problem — we’ll just take some time off.

The kitchen - the dominant space of every household. A kitchen where housewives chatter playfully about things that remain an eternal mystery to men. A place where the Sunday goose roasts in the oven, where a bottle of spirits is hidden behind the flour in the cupboard, where the crying from the next room cannot be heard, where we teach our daughters how to cut out Christmas cookies and the know-how of becoming the perfect wife and housekeeper. The kitchen as a woman’s natural environment. What?

Isn’t it every man’s wish to have a picture-perfect wife at home - one who always satisfies him sexually and, at the same time, an honest housekeeper who polishes the household to perfection after he returns from work?

Ladies and gentlemen - that is, gentlemen - this is kitchen porn. Two in one.

Perfection. Or maybe not.

Michaela Karásek Čejková.tif

Kitchen Porn as a parody of the unrealistic expectations society places on women. Even the most basic question - what is a woman, and who is a woman - may not have a single, clear answer. And yet, so many feel entitled to tell women who they should be and how they should live. What defines a woman? And how does she define herself?

From an early age, we learn to judge ourselves through the eyes of others - parents, classmates, friends, role models, idols. In doing so, we form not only our view of the world, but also of ourselves. Unconsciously, we may begin shaping ourselves to fit the expectations of others. We want to measure up. We want to belong. We adopt behavioural patterns and continue long-established stereotypes. Generational legacies - ideas about women and their place in society — are passed down from parents to children, just like our great-grandmothers’ handwritten recipes. Family secrets are shared, cookbooks are handed over. Generational trauma and unhealthy behavioural patterns are passed on as well.

We may sense who society wants us to be - but who do we truly want to become? Is what has been hammered into our minds for centuries enough, or do we need to redefine the very concept of womanhood? Tereza and Kristýna will guide you through the life of a woman as they perceive it - lived, imagined, and yet to come - and attempt to reveal how paradoxical and absurd women’s position in society can be. Even though it doesn’t have to be that way.

Each performance is followed by a discussion with experts.
