On the occasion of the worldwide celebration of Circus Nights, which aims to bring the diversity and creativity of new circus closer to the public, we have decided to share with you a special lecture by Veronika Štefanová – a Czech expert in interdisciplinary performative forms, who will guide you through the fascinating world of new circus.
Circus Nights has been striving for over 5 years to popularize new circus and show that it is an art form that goes far beyond the traditional concept of circus as we know it from the past. New circus explores new forms of expression, combines different genres, and invites audiences to experience a powerful performance that blends physical virtuosity with emotions and storytelling.
In Ostrava, as part of the Circus Nights celebrations, a performative walk, Carpe(t) Diem Reloaded, will take place on November 16 at FUTUREU. To extend this celebration online, we bring you a recording of a lecture from this year's MOVE Fest. Veronika Štefanová, an expert on contemporary performative forms, offers an engaging overview of the development of new circus. She explores how circus has evolved from its traditional form into an interdisciplinary art that connects dance, theatre, music, and visual arts. She also touches on how new circus has become a platform for social and political themes and how its forms constantly change according to the current tastes of the audience and the possibilities of the artists.
Below, you will find supplementary study materials from Veronika, which will allow you to delve deeper into the world of new circus and its theoretical and practical aspects. We hope you enjoy the lecture and that it will provide you with a fresh perspective on an art form that surprises with its dynamism, originality, and ability to evoke strong emotions.
